No Stroke Left Behind
Workshop
In This Workshop, You'll Learn:
-1-
Building a Grisaille Foundation with Color Intent
Learn how to construct a value-based underpainting that goes beyond simple grayscale. We'll explore why choosing specific colors — rather than just neutrals — for each section of the underpainting creates richer, more luminous results in the finished drawing.
-2-
Capturing Warm and Cool Light Relationships
Discover how to render the dramatic interplay between the warm glow of the lamp and the cooler, natural light spilling through the window. You'll learn how temperature contrast creates depth, atmosphere, and emotional storytelling in a single scene.
-3-
Rendering Soft Textures: Fabric, Skin, and Interior Details
Understand how to approach the varied textures in this scene — from the delicate floral fabric of her blouse to the smooth surface of the piano keys, the soft curtain folds, and the warm reflection of lamplight on wood. Each texture requires a different touch, and we'll work through them together.
-4-
Creating Atmosphere and Mood Through Intentional Layering
Learn how to use subtle, deliberate color layering to capture the soft, serene mood of this scene — the warmth of the interior, the quiet glow of the lamp, the coolness of the window glass, and the suggestion of a beautiful summer day just beyond the frame.
You'll strengthen your fundamentals by focusing on structure, light, and color temperature while learning how to confidently render a full atmospheric portrait, from the first underpainting stroke to the final luminous layer, all within the calm, intentional framework of No Stroke Left Behind.

Let’s embark on this creative journey together!
Struggling to capture mood and atmosphere in your colored pencil portraits?
That feeling is completely NORMAL.
Portraits set in rich, atmospheric scenes — with complex lighting, layered textures, and emotional depth — can feel overwhelming before you even pick up a pencil.
Without a structured approach, it's easy to overwork the surface, lose the mood you're chasing, and end up with something that feels flat and lifeless instead of warm and full of feeling.
In this live workshop, we work through those challenges together in real time.
You'll learn how to build a solid grisaille foundation — and then layer rich, intentional color on top of it, section by section, so the light glows, the textures breathe, and the atmosphere fills the page.
We'll focus on how warm and cool tones interact across the scene, how to suggest softness and depth in the background, and how to render a complex interior setting with clarity and confidence.
Everything is demonstrated and developed live, step by step, so you're never left guessing.
You're building confidence as the portrait comes together.
Clarity. Structure. Results.
That’s No Stroke Left Behind!
All while working in a team environment.

Discover the Power of Grisaille with Color Underpainting
In this workshop, we focus on a modified grisaille approach — building value structure first, then using targeted color in the underpainting to warm or cool each section before the final layers go on top. This method gives your colored pencil work a luminous quality that's hard to achieve any other way. You'll learn why different areas of the drawing benefit from different underpainting colors, and how those choices shape everything that comes after.
-
Build Confidence in Complex Lighting and Atmospheric Portraits
Atmospheric scenes present a unique challenge — multiple light sources, overlapping textures, and the need to suggest mood and depth at the same time. You'll learn how to organize the scene, manage the relationship between warm lamp light and cool window light, and render each area with intentional, confident strokes that hold together as a unified whole.
